Marine dies and 14 injured at Camp Pendleton as grim 2023 death toll at base rises further

The Marine died during a tactical vehicle rollover at Camp Pendelton, according to authorities.

A died at Camp Pendleton, in a tactical vehicle rollover during a training exercise, according to USMC Officials.

The soldier, who was assigned to the 15th Marine Expeditionary Unit, has not been named but officials said he was killed on Tuesday during the incident.

Another 14 Marines were in the vehicle when it rolled over. They were taken to nearby hospitals and the Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton for treatment.

The conditions of the other Marines is unclear. The name of the deceased is being withheld until their next of kin is notified, officials said.

According to the Orange Country Register, the Marines were aboard an Amphibious Combat Vehicle (ACV). Troops have reportedly had a series of accidents training on the vehicles since it was introduced in 2019.

This isn't the first accidental death at the base this year.

In August, another Marine was killed during a live fire exercise at the base.

Lance Cpl. Joseph D Whaley was fatally shot on August 17 while participating in the training exercise.

Of that incident, Marine Corps spokesperson Maj. Joshua Pena said in a statement: "The family and loved ones have our deepest condolences as we continue to work with them during this difficult time."

In July 2022, five Camp Pendleton Marines were killed when their MV-22B Osprey crashed during a training mission.

In April 2020, an amphibious vehicle sank during an off-base training exercise near San Clemente Island, killing nine.

Ten years ago, four Marines died while performing maintenance at the live fire training range at Camp Pendleton.

The soldiers died in an explosion while they were sweeping the area for unexploded ordinance.
