An automotive influencer has revealed how drivers who live in their vehicle can stay warm, even when the temperatures drop below freezing point.

Shelby runs the TikTok page @groundupadventures, which documents her time travelling around the country, including advice on living on the road.

In one of her videos, Shelby tells viewers how she plans to sleep overnight in her van when the temperature is set to reach -5 degrees.

She explains: “Since it’s -5 tonight and I don’t have a zero-degree bag I try to do as much as I can to insulate myself, so underneath I have two Nemo Switchbacks. One’s like the normal size and then that one’s a short, and then I’ll be sleeping on this side.

“And then I have this Rei sleeping pad. This is a two-person sleeping pad, it doesn’t really inflate anymore, it’s kind of more there just for extra cushion and just a little bit of extra warmth.”

In the video, Shelby showed viewers that she manages to stay warm during the winter months by putting several substantial covers underneath her as she sleeps.

These include two thin sleeping mats and a thicker sleeping pad, which help to prevent the cold from entering the vehicle through the floor.

Shelby noted that they also help to make sleeping in the vehicle a more comfortable experience, providing additional cushioning.

Later in the video, Shelby added that she also has several sleeping bags to provide additional layers and an electric blanket controlled by a battery pack.

She continued: “So I have these two people North Face 15 degree sleeping bag, and a Kelty 15 degree sleeping bag. I really like this for just, like, normal camping and then inside of that I actually have an electric blanket, and this is hooked up to my Jackery.

I have my Jackery right here and I can plug the electric blanket in and control the temperature right there. And then the last thing that I have is this Mountain Hardware Bishop’s Past 15 degree sleeping bag, and this is a money bag that I’m going to wear inside of this North Face sleeping bag, just in case I need the extra warmth.”

With nearly 5,000 follows and hundreds of likes on her video, Shelby received a lot of praise by viewers in the comments section.

One viewer wrote: “You are well prepared. I prefer to chase warmer weather. I have a Prius with remote start so I can use the cars heater.”

Another added: “That’s cold, cold. I would have chickened out and ran the engine all night.”
