A car expert specializing in auto maintenance and repairs has revealed five commonly overlooked car cleaning mistakes that can damage your vehicle and bank account.

The auto enthusiast, Chris, listed his warnings on YouTube, covering cleaning at commercial wash locations and at home

In his video, Chris (@chrisfix) first highlights how he believes you should avoid visiting contact and contactless commercial car washes.

Contact car washes involve cleaning tools like brushes touching your vehicle while it’s undergoing cleaning.

Chris notes: “These car washes are guaranteed to scratch your finish. Even if the car wash says it’s soft bristles and soft cloth, dirt gets trapped in the cloth and ends up getting trapped against your paint.”

Chris adds that contactless car washes are still aggressive since water slams on your paint’s surface to remove dirt.

This high-pressure water can be too high and cause damage.

However, even if you’re dealing with lower water pressure, dirt can still press against paint, resulting in scratching.

Chris clarifies that he’s more likely to care about these small scratches if he is driving a sports car or new vehicle, so motorists with a used economy ride are typically more accepting of the minor defects.

Next, Chris mentions how drivers often make the mistake of washing their cars in direct sunlight when it’s hot.

He explains how hot temperature environments can cause the water spraying on your vehicle’s paint to evaporate and leave residue on your paint quickly.

This internet influencer also notes how many chemical cleaning products drivers use aren’t for hot surfaces.

Chris suggests parking your car in a shaded or garage area to use these chemical cleaning products and adds that washing as the sun sets can make it easier to spot dirt on your exterior.

The video’s presenter additionally emphasizes how using kitchen dish soap or degreaser to clean your vehicle isn’t a good idea.

More specifically, he says these products strip your car’s protective wax coating, causing any waxing work to go to waste.
