An automotive YouTuber has revealed one of the easiest and most effective ways for motorists to protect their car from thieves.

Roman Mica is one of the presenters on the TFLcars YouTube channel, which reviews all kinds of cars and helps viewers with expensive issues.

In a recent video, Roman advised viewers how an affordable accessory can prevent thieves from hijacking their way into the driver's seat.

He explained: “Hey guys, did you know that criminals could steal your car by spoofing the signal that’s coming from your key? That’s right, they can use a computer, grab the signal and have your car started in minutes.

“As you can tell the car is locked, the mirror is in, hit the button, it unlocks and then of course I can get in and then start it. Now let me show you something that prevents that from happening. It’s this, a Faraday pouch.”

Roman shows viewers the faraday pouch

By keeping the keys in a faraday pouch, their signal cannot reach the car, accidentally unlocking it (Image: @TFLcar)

A Faraday pouch is a small bag that features a metal mesh inside to block the signal sent out by the key fob, meaning it cannot be used to unlock the car.

Whilst this is particularly important for owners of vehicles that feature keyless entry, which could automatically unlock if the fob is too near, it also means thieves cannot clone the signal to break in.

Motorists are also advised to keep the spare set of keys in a safe space far away from where the vehicle is typically parked.

Later in the video, Roman notes that using a Faraday pouch also prevents the car from being started.

He continued: “What it does is it blocks the signal from your key from actually reaching the car. Now, not only can I not open the door, if I unlock the car, I’ll show you that I won’t be able to start it as well.

“So, once again the key is in the Faraday pouch, open the door, start the car and nothing happens. Now, if you want to keep your car safe at home this is called a Faraday box.

"It does the same thing, I bought it on Amazon for about $30, I bought this [faraday bag] for about $20. It’s the easy way to keep your car safe at home or when you’re traveling.”
