New research has revealed the ideal date people should have their gift shopping done to avoid a Christmas crisis.

Millions of people will turn to the internet to get their loved ones the perfect gift but they will need to take delivery times into account to ensure their browsing has a happy ending.

A study from Ubuy Switzerland has suggested December 16 is the ideal deadline to avoid a last-minute scramble to find substitute presents.

The company compared average shipping times for popular stores like Sephora, Anthropologie and Nordstrom to calculate the day people should keep in mind when Christmas shopping.

While many shops like Apple and Net-a-Porter have fairly quick turnaround times, others can take up to two weeks to deliver good to your front door.

A spokesperson for UBuy Switzerland said: "As we all know, finding the perfect present for our loved ones can be both thrilling and challenging.

"However, one key to ensuring a stress-free and joyful Christmas is to plan ahead, especially when it comes to online shopping.

“In today's fast-paced world, the convenience of ordering gifts online cannot be overstated.

"From unique handcrafted items to the latest gadgets, the internet provides many options that cater to every taste.

"But, and it's a big but, the key is to order in time to avoid any last-minute chaos."

They added: “The holiday rush can lead to shipping delays and items going out of stock, making it crucial to plan your online purchases well in advance.

"By placing your orders early, you not only secure the gifts you have in mind but also ensure they arrive on your doorstep in time for the big day.

"It's the perfect way to beat the holiday hustle and bustle, allowing you to relax and savor the festive moments with your loved ones."

Those turning to independent businesses on platforms like Etsy will also need to take into account the US Post Services's deadline for deliveries.

USPS set the deadline for average five-day shipping on December 16 as well.

Americans willing to spend a bit more for two-day shipping will have until December 20, with the deadline moving to December 21 for priority mail.

Mail express shipping, which normally delivers in one day, also has a December 21 deadline but USPS still advises to send and order your presents as early as possible.
