A commercial plane has been forced to make an emergency landing after a potential threat was reported.

The Breeze Airways flight 717 was bound for Rhode Island from Orlando, Florida on Tuesday when it was forced to land just an hour into its journey.

The aircraft safely landed at Jacksonville Airport at 5:30pm

A spokesperson for the FBI's Jacksonville field office said a "potential threat" was reported on board the aircraft.

The FBI spokesperson said: "Agents are currently questioning those involved, but there is no information so far to indicate that any legitimate threat existed."

Witnesses told News4JAX that a couple got into an argument right before the flight took off.

Passenger Rachael Corrigan said: "The people were talking about or claiming the other person had a bomb during their fight.

"The people around them heard the word bomb, reported it to the airline, and they’re obligated to land the plane."

Tanya McGinn said: "A dad and his daughter got up and walked back and said, ‘We asked to get moved because someone was talking about a bomb that they had'."

Following the emergency landing the flight was cancelled and passengers were told it would not resume until the following day.

It is unclear at this time if any arrests have been in connection with the incident.

The Federal Aviation Authority said in a statement: "Breeze Airways Flight 717 landed safely at Jacksonville International Airport around 6pm local time Tuesday, December 5, after the crew reported a passenger disturbance.

"The Airbus A220 departed from Orlando International Airport and was en route to Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport. The FAA will investigate.”
