Boost your immunity to those annoying colds this winter with these essential tips from a healthcare expert.

Karen Baker, an expert pharmacist, spoke to Daily Express US and offered her valuable tips to combat the season of colds and viruses.

With more than 200 viruses responsible for causing the common cold, the human body's struggle to build resistance and the increased susceptibility of some individuals make winter a peak season for sickness.

She said: "Some people are more susceptible to colds as their immune system is not as efficient. This could be due to a medical condition, or just their genetic makeup.

"As the weather changes, it can be difficult to stay on track when it comes to eating a balanced diet whilst also maintaining an active lifestyle.

"However, a good regime can not only help you feel your best, but it will also help build up a strong immune system."

Tip 1: Stay hydrated

Baker could not stress enough how important staying hydrated is for our immune system.

She advises to aim to drink between 1.5 and 2.5 liters of water a day as this "helps support your body in fighting infections and maintaining your body’s temperature balance."

Tip 2: Don't forget self-care

There are many small steps you can take and routines you can implement into your daily life to boost your immunity to winter sickness.

Baker specifically recommends getting plenty of sleep and eating balanced meals that contain enough Vitamin C - which you can do by eating a variety of fruits and veg.

She said: "It’s important to stay active and get plenty of fresh air, but also take the time to de-stress and relax. Steamy showers can also help moisturize your nasal and throat passages.”

Tip 3: Vitamin D is key

Getting enough Vitamin D in winter may seem like an impossible task, what with the short days and long nights, but Baker insists it's something you need to do for your body to be in the best condition to fight sickness.

She said: "Vitamin D supplements can be a great option. You should always speak to your local pharmacist for advice and guidance on product recommendations.”

Tip 4: Practice good hygeine

Now this one goes without saying, but Baker still stresses the importance of maintaining good hygiene is "the best way to prevent catching a winter virus, whether this be the common cold, flu, or Covid-19."

She said: "Ensure you wash your hands frequently with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, clean frequently touched surfaces, and avoid close contact with people who are sick."

Tip 5: Visit your local drugstore

If you start to feel yourself becoming sick, visit your local drugstore as quickly as possible, as they can offer you advice and medicine.

Barber said: "You should always speak to your pharmacist about the suitable remedies for cold and flu symptoms, as product recommendations may differ from person to person."

A combination of Baker's top five essential tips is the best way to boost your immune system to prevent and fight off sickness this winter.
