The Finger Lakes region sits in upstate New York with Seneca Lake the deepest and longest of the Finger Lakes. At its southern tip sits a small town Watkins Glen which is steps away from the majestic 778-acre Watkins Glen State Park.

It is home to a 400ft dramatic gorge and no less than 19 waterfalls cascading through the canyon. The town itself has a charming Seneca Lake Pier and an adorable village brimming with independent shops, bars, and eateries.

Car racing fans will be familiar with Watkins Glen International, the spiritual home of road racing in the US.

It has also hosted the NASCAR Cup Series Go Bowling at The Glen. Beyond the track, are unique, natural attractions and a thriving wine scene to explore.

Walk the “Glen”

You can’t come to the area and not enter the glen to see all the waterfalls and incredible rock formations.

Within the Watkins Glen State Park are 200ft high cliffs, campsites, and other lodging opportunities; playgrounds, even a swimming pool. Without a doubt, the main attraction is the waterfalls.

Most visitors hit The Gorge Trail which runs for just over two miles and features stairs and walkways constructed around and over the water.

This trail offers the best views of the waterfalls. Rainbow Falls is the ‘star’ fall having featured on magazine covers and is regularly touted as one of the best things to see in New York State.

Head out on the water

Seneca Lake is vast and two beaches offer a relaxing spot to spend the day swimming; Watkins Glen Beach and Sampson State Park Beach. Those not interested in swimming could cast a line and see what they can reel in.

A sunset cruise on the adorably-named historic schooner, “True Love” is a relaxing way to end the day and enjoy some of the most spectacular and romantic views across the Lake.

Go wine Tasting

The southeast side of Seneca Lake is affectionally known as the “Banana Belt” by the winemakers. This lush area is also home to some sensational wineries and farm-to-table restaurants. The area is best known for its rieslings but the reds are slowly getting recognised.

Three wine trails cover 27 wineries. All the producers know each other and the competition is friendly.

There are always events on at one or more of them; from musical performances in the vines to Christmas wreath-making classes.

Sample the local fare

F.L.X Wienery has fabulous gourmet hotdogs and for veggies, try Moosewood in Ithaca, a large, relaxing restaurant that has been whipping up superb veggie menus since 1973. There is also a raft of cideries. A must is Eve’s in Van Etten which is family-run and has been bottling cider since 2001.
