Millions across US on alert as powerful weekend storm promises heavy rain and snow

Meteorologists have said a highly disruptive storm will hit the central and eastern US this upcoming weekend, bringing heavy rain and snow to major cities.

Wichita: Snow impacts cars and travel

A powerful storm is set to unleash severe thunderstorms, heavy rain, and possibly even snow to the central and eastern US this upcoming weekend.

Meteorologists from AccuWeather have said an abrupt change in the weather pattern will affect millions of Americans, as dry and mild conditions this week will set the stage for a highly disruptive storm this weekend.

Forecasters have advised residents from the Midwest to the Gulf Coast to the East Coast to check the forecast and be prepared.

A storm tracking through the central Rockies will shift towards the southern and central Plains on Friday, when chilly air from the Rockies and northern Plains will clash with warm and humid air coming from the Gulf of Mexico.

This combination could create a rapidly intensifying storm, in which heavy rain and severe thunderstorms will hit the southern Plains and move into the Mississippi River valley Friday night - when the main event will be underway.

The storm will intensify into Saturday, putting an entire region spanning from eastern Texas into Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and western Tennessee on a storm watch.

Shreveport, Louisiana, Little Rock, Arkansas, and Memphis, Tennessee, are cities to watch out for.

The storm system could possibly track farther north into the Ohio Valley on Saturday before it heads East on Sunday.

From Florida all the way up to the mid-Atlantic states, there will be heavy rain and severe thunderstorms to end the weekend.

And heavy snow isn’t out of the question either.

AccuWeather Meterologist Joe Bauer said: “This storm will interact with cold air on the northwest side of the storm.

“If the cold air can move in quickly enough, we could be looking at a zone of impactful snow from the Midwest and up through the Great Lakes Saturday into Sunday.”

Residents in cities such as Chicago and Detroit have been advised to closely monitor the forecast and prepare for hazardous wintry conditions and delays when traveling this weekend.

And along the East Coast, cities from Washington, D.C., to Boston will likely see heavy rain from the storm between Sunday and Monday.
