The gunman who killed three people at the University of Nevada in Las Vegas (UNLV) has been given an "in remembrance" memorial on his Linkedin in the aftermath.

The decision to place a tribute to former college professor Anthony "Tony" Polito has sparked backlash on social media.

In comments on Twitter, users called the memorial "disgusting."

The gunman was killed by law enforcement near the UNLV Student Union and Beam Hall buildings after the shooting began on Wednesday.

Police have not yet named the victims of the shooting, but media reports have said none were students.

Investigators are currently digging into what drove the shooting, including the gunman's online presence.

On Thursday morning, LinkedIn tagged Polito's page as memorialized and "in remembrance." Soon after, his page was removed from the site and is no longer available.

It is likely police will continue to investigate Polito's online accounts, News 3 reported, as the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department's sheriff said on Wednesday that they have "no idea on the motive."

Police said they also do not have details on the weapon used in the shooting.

The university's campus, located about two miles away from the Las Vegas Strip, will remain closed through Friday.

According to LinkedIn's Help pages, an account is memorialized if someone is "authorized to act on behalf of a deceased member, and have the required information and documentation, you can request to close their account.

"If you aren't authorized, you can only report a member as deceased and we will memorialize the profile."
