As delays in getting a U.S. passport increase, the US State Department have launched a series of events across the country to help speed up the process.

Currently, the processing times for a new passport can take up to 17 weeks. This increase in demand is due to a surge in people wanting to travel post-pandemic.

It has also been caused by the removal of the ability to renew your passport online.

To help ease the backlog, the US State Department has announced a series of “Special Acceptance Passport Fairs”.

Running now and into September, the fairs are taking place at libraries, post offices and other venues across a range of cities.

Most events require prior appointment while some will accommodate people who turn up on the day.

Generally, the fairs are for first-time customers only and children, applying for their first passports and lodging Form DS-11.

The advantage is that if you have any questions, they can be answered on the spot, helping make applying for a passport for the first time, less stressful.

Passports will be processed within (10-13 weeks) or you can apply for the expedited service (7-9 weeks).

People are advised to submit their applications at least six months prior to their scheduled departure dates.
