Trump may need to win the Presidential election to stay out of prison, says DAVID MADDOX

ANALYSIS: Whether you think Donald Trump is facing his just desserts in court or is the victim of a weaponised legal system, it feels like the only sure sanctuary for the former President is getting back into the White House.

Donald Trump stops at Miami cafe to make a prayer

The moving scene of prayers President Trump received from wellwishers in a cafe in Miami somehow encapsulated the sence that "the Donald" needs a miracle to escape his current predicament.

On top of the indictment by a court in New York he is now facing 37 federal charges over documents he allegedly wrongly took from his time in the White House.

A cobination of ambitious Democrat lawyers and an FBI driven on by a Democrat White House have somehow caught the man who shocked the world when he entered the White House in 2016 instead of Hillary Clinton in a legal bind.

As divided as America is the fate of Trump reflect this country's politics.

He is a martyr or a villain, not many people are in the middle on this one.

But either perspective looks bleak for Trump.

If, as he and the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement believe, he is the victim of a weaponsied justice system being orchestrated by the Biden administration, then the only way to stop the inevitable injustice from happening is to kick the Democrats out of the White House.

Even then the only way that Trump can guarantee that he can pull off the dogs of the law pursuing him is by being the President.

None of his Republican rivals - not even Governor Ron DeSantis - can be relied upon to do the job.

But the same is equally true if the former President is actually guilty - in that situation he only escapes justice by putting himself above the law.

In his rally in Georgia over the weekend - in a state where there may be yet more charges - Trump reflected on how he did not need to go into politics.

He could have stuck with his celebrity lifestyle and his business empire and been rich and happy.

And there is more than a grain of truth to the feeling that had he done just that and not had the temerity to beat the Democrats and their sense of political entitlement in 2016 then none of these charges would be forthcoming.

The only question he would be having to answer would be which apprentice to fire.

But, as he also reflected, he is in this to win now and he is not giving up.

His natural desire to always be a winner plays a major part in that approach but also it could be that he does not have a choice.

If the net is closing in on Trump and the forces of the law are arrayed against him, he has but one option.

He cannot step back, he has to fight.

And that will pose a major problem for Biden and the Republicans looking for the nomination.

They have removed any ability to have an accommodation with Trump, a happy compromise where he simply goes away (not that that was ever likely).

But they have also created a situation where eackh legal action against him makes Trup politically stronger, galvanises his support and ensures that he fights tooth and nail to return to the White House.

This is no longer just about which view of America survives - although that is an important reason for the actions against Trump - but it is for the very survival of the former President and his associates.

As any hunter will tell you, an animal cornered is at its most dangerous and Trump was already a pretty formidable opponent.
