The Last of Us will be back for season two - but fans are worried about the fate of Pedro Pascals character.

HBO’s critically acclaimed apocalyptic drama was renewed for another season at the beginning of the year, and viewers are wondering what lies in store for Joel.

The series’ first season was heavily based on the 2013 action-adventure game developed by Naughty Dog and it is expected the upcoming season will follow part two of the popular game.

For those who haven't played the game, Joel dies in The Last of US Part Two, after being hunted down by a mysterious militia.

After fans have speculated Joel’s fate in season two, the show’s boss has finally addressed how much Part Two has influenced the other writers.

Speaking to Josh Horowitz on his Happy Sad Confused podcast, Craig Mazin, who is The Last of Us’ showrunner remained tight-lipped about Joel’s demise.

“I mean, I can’t tell you anything about that season. Joel dies? Okay. I’m not saying a g*****n thing.”

“People will have to wonder. And you know what, good. ” he teased.

“Because here’s the thing. First of all, anytime you’re making [a product like this] … anytime you’re adapting something where there’s source material.

“There’s certainly an expectation that the adaptation will hit the main source material points and that is mostly what happens,” he added.

Craig also maintained that the creative crew had a solid plan in mind for the execution of Joel’s storyline, but whether this includes Joel's death or not was left mysteriously open.

The first season of the hit action drama managed to strike a fine balance between being relevant to the game and including its own takes on specific plots and storylines.

It has also been reported that HBO is keen on renewing The Last of Us for a third season.

This could possibly mean the writers may want to keep Joel in action for as long as possible.

The Last of Us Part II picks up four years after the first game and storyline, where Joel and Ellie (played by Bella Ramsey) are now living in a large community settlement in Jackson, Wyoming.

The duo finally gets a taste of normal life, as Ellie has a healthy relationship with a woman named Dina, meanwhile, Joel is seen as a fatherly figure by the community.

However, things take a tragic turn when players then meet a character called Abby, who is seeking revenge against Joel for killing her father, who was one of the surgeons he killed when saving Ellie.

By the time Ellie finds Joel, she is held captive and made to witness him getting beaten to death.

The Last of Us is available to stream on HBO Max in the US.
