Storage hack to keep your potatoes fresh and stop them going soft
When your potatoes go bad before you've had a proper chance to use them it could be a big upset. One woman shared where she stores potatoes so they stay fresh.
Alex, a food-savvy woman who enjoys cooking, has had to deal with a common problem that potato consumers have run into at least once – your potatoes going bad before you’ve had a chance to use them. She found a solution that worked to keep them fresh and took to her TikTok (@mac.larena) to tell her 511k followers about it.
With a question for viewers, Alex began her video: “If your potatoes are going soft or going bad quickly, my question is where are you keeping them?”
She shared her simple solution which she acknowledged is a controversial one – storing your potatoes in the fridge. She noted that a few people have said you’re not supposed to, but the summer heat left her with no other cool, dark spots.
“I keep mine in the fridge,” she said. By doing this her potatoes never get eyes or go soft. In the winter she occasionally stores them in the garage if it’s a bigger bag of potatoes.

Alex encouraged viewers of her video to share their own potato-storing tips in the comments.

One person said that they just put their potatoes on the kitchen floor and had no idea you could put them in the fridge.

A third viewer said they thought putting potatoes in the fridge “wasn't a thing”. Instead, they tried storing them in a mesh bag in a closed cabinet, though it hadn’t been working out.
Another TikTok user shared they keep their potatoes everywhere imaginable, yet can’t seem to keep them from going bad. “Basement, garage, under the sink, in the bag, in the closet, in the fridge. They've been going bad and soft.
“I've tried everywhere and everything. I just don't buy potatoes anymore.”
A cold storage area seemed to work for one spectator's dad though. They wrote: “Cold and dark is best. But even soft they’re still good. My dad keeps his in a cold storage shed.”
