Berries will last for three weeks or longer without rotting if a key ingredient is used

Berries going bad not too long after you've purchased them is a pain. This can be quickly fixed with the advice of a food-loving mom.

Berries go bad so quickly due to their high water content, high porosity, and delicate skin. This makes the delicious fruit absorb surplus water in its surroundings very easily. In addition, they carry mold spores that grow super fast when there is tons of moisture present.

If you want to keep your berries lasting for weeks, mom Jennifer Valentyne (@jennifervalentyne) has shared her go-to way to keep them fresh with her 619k TikTok followers.

Add about half a cup of white vinegar to a bowl of water. After that place your berries in the bowl.

Leave your berries soaking in the bowl for five minutes and then place them in a colander for straining to get any excess liquid out.

Valentyne advised: “Don’t rinse, I promise you won’t taste the vinegar.”

After letting the berries dry, line the container the berries were purchased in with a few paper towels and place the berries back inside. Cover your berries with an additional paper towel before closing the container, and they’re ready to be stored away in the fridge.

Valentyne said: “They could last up to three weeks.”

“And you could do it with all your berries, just be very gentle with the raspberries,” she finished off.

Viewers in the comments section of Valentyne's clip left their own suggestions, like one person who wrote: “I put them unwashed in a mason jar with a paper towel. Last quite long.”

To which the content creator responded: “That works too!!”

Seconding the mason jar idea, another viewer wrote: “You can skip the vinegar and just put them in a glass mason jar. Our berries last two-three weeks in the fridge.”

Someone else who likes to add baking soda to the vinegar and wash process said they like to store their berries in "large glass mason jars” as they’re “attempting to get rid of all plastics”.

Backing the hack, one viewer wrote: “I do this. Totally works.”

And someone else well aware of the hack said: “I do this but use those produce-saver containers. Lasts even longer.”
