Social Security claimants are waiting for checks worth $914 which are due for later this month.

This particular direct claimant is for retired Americans who are recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI).

The payment is a means-tested benefit awarded by Social Security for those who need additional financial assistance on top of their savings.

Even with wages increasing and inflation easing, millions of Americans are still struggling to get by.

As such, those in a financially vulnerable situation are encouraged to check their eligibility for SSI.

When is SSI paid?

Supplement Security Income is meant-tested which means applicants need to meet the eligibility criteria.

The payment is designed to help those entitled to Social Security benefits who have a qualifying disability or injury, or who are older.

Normally, SSI is given to claimants on the first working day of the month which means SSI recipients already received their September payment.

However, due to October 1 falling on a Sunday, claimants will now get paid on September 29 which is the Friday before.

Who is eligible for this payment?

According to the Social Security website, the following people are entitled to SSI if they meet the following criteria:

  • Claimants need to be aged 65 and older, be blind, or have a disability
  • Claimants must be on a limited income, which includes wages and pensions
  • Claimants must not own a lot of material things.
  • Claimants must be either a US citizen or nationals of the US but some non-citizens may qualify.

How much is the payment?

Currently, the maximum amount an individual claimant can get from SSI every month is $914.

However, this is hiked to $1,371 a month for Social Security beneficiaries who are in a married couple.

These payments are only delivered if both people in the couple are entitled to SSI.

As well as this, the average amount a Social Security claimant can get from the means-tested benefit is $550 a month.
