Snoop Dogg has announced he's quitting smoking weed - but fans can't quite believe it.

The rapper and musician has been long-associated with his love of marijuana, launching his own strains, smoking on stage and often becoming a running joke.

However, it appears the Drop It Like It's Hot star is putting the lighter down.

Announcing the news on Instagram, the 52-year-old singer shared a sombre black and white picture, and wrote: "After much consideration and conversation with my family, I've decided to give up smoke.

"Please respect my privacy at this time."

However, fans were in such shock at the announcement, they refused to believe it.

"This isn’t even the first of April yet are you high right now?" wrote one fan, while several others stated he would be 'moving on to edibles'.

"He said he giving up smoke, he aint say he giving up marijuana," noted another.

However, others back the artist's decision, as one wrote: "I respect it, UNK! That said, 'smoking Snoop' is a pillar of my knowledge, my whole reality has shifted. I can’t say I’ll know what’s up or down anymore"

"The courage, the boldness, the ability to announce that you’re stopping something that made you SO SO SO much money which created a character that you and all of us are used too is truly remarkable," added another.

"As a sober man I speak for me and all of us sober people around the world, welcome to sobriety!!!"

The singer, who has songs including Smoke Weed Every Day, has partaken in the drug from a young age.

Back in 2008, he told Esquire that he first got high at the age of 'eight or nine', stating: "The first time I got high off marijuana was in the seventies, with one of my uncles.

“They had these little roaches on the table - these part-way-smoked marijuana cigarettes - and there was some Schlitz Malt Liquor Bull.

“I went in there and sipped the Schlitz, and my uncle asked me did I wanna hit that roach. And I was like, ‘Yeah.’ He put it on the roach clip for me and lit it up, and I hit that motherf****r.”

Since then he's become such a frequent user that he famously has a 'professional blunt roller' on his entourage - paying him $100k a year to roll his joints.
