VMAs: Lil Wayne, Doja Cat and Olivia Rodrigo to perform

Selena Gomez fans were taken aback as the star was caught in the audience "throwing shade” at Olivia Rodrigo

The VMAs saw superstars from around the world gathered at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, from Justin Timberlake and Taylor Swift to Dojo Cat and Shakira.

Among those in the audience was Lose You to Love Me singer Selena Gomez who caught fans’ attention but for the wrong reasons.

Singer Olivia Rodrigo, 20, took to the stage to perform her hit song Vampire during the prestigious awards ceremony but an unhappy Selena, 31, was seen plugging her ears as she looked up at the stage.

The Only Murders in the Building star held one hand up to her ear with her eyes wide, appearing to be looking around and not removing her hand until the performance was done.

The moment may have been brief but VMAs viewers quickly jumped on social media to point it out.

One fan wrote: “Selena’s face during Olivia’s performance, I’m dying”, while another commented: “Selena looking concerned for Olivia because she definitely has not seen the Vampire video”.

A third joked: “Selena covering her ears because Olivia was screaming. IJBOL.”

Whereas another agreed with the singer’s actions, writing: “Lol Selena Gomez was all of us.

“Olivia Rodrigo performance is confusing the heck out of me.” (sic)

Fans of Rodrigo will be very familiar with her music video for Vampire which sees her take to a fake stage to perform the song.

Everything starts going wrong though when some of the set starts to fall apart but continues to try and finish her performance with the audience looking fascinated.

Rodrigo tried to recreate this for the VMAs but it would have left some viewers confused if they hadn’t already seen the music video.

And it was this video that landed Rodrigo the award for best editing at the ceremony.

Selena previously didn’t publicly announce she would be attending the MTV VMAs.

However, she was nominated for several awards this year including Collaboration of the Year and Song of the Year, having already won nine VMAs in her career.

This time around, she accepted the Best Afrobeats Award for Calm Down.
