A security guard was shot in the back of the head on Saturday after he tried to break up a fight during a high school football game in Utica, New York.

At least two shots were fired just after 4 pm in a parking lot outside Thomas R. Proctor High School, according to police.

A video taken of the incident shows about a dozen people fighting on the pavement when the shots rang out.

One of the two security guards who had tried to separate the group dropped to the ground after being struck by one of the bullets.

He was immediately rushed to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition. According to police, a lone gunman responsible for the incident is still on the loose.

Just moments before the shooting, the group had been turned away from the football game against nearby Binghamton High School by a member of the school’s law enforcement, according to Utica Police Chief Mark Williams.

Although the football stadium is outfitted with metal detectors, the guard turned the group away before he could have been alerted to the firearm.

Williams said: “He suspected that something wasn’t right with this group and he refused to lead into the stadium.”

The gunman is still on the loose, and officers have not yet uncovered a motive - but they said it may be gang-related.

This shooting comes just one week after a student was killed and an adult woman was injured when a shooting broke out at a Louisiana high school football game.

And last month, a teen suffered the same deadly fate when he was shot during an Oklahoma football game.
