The smash-hit film has passed a huge milestone just a couple of days after director Greta Gerwig celebrated her 40th birthday with a surprise gift from Ryan Gosling.

Barbie star Ryan Gosling sent Greta Gerwig a flashmob of Kens as a surprise gift for her birthday.

The director turned 40 on Friday, August 4, shortly before her hit movie officially reached $1 billion at the global box office on Sunday.

A video on the Barbie Instagram page revealed Gerwig giggling ecstatically as a solo Ken began a performance of the film’s already-iconic song I’m Just Ken.

She was even more excited when a group of backup Kens entered the room and began to dance.

The clip was posted with the caption: “As Kens know…. Sometimes the only way to express your feelings is through song & dance!

“Ken Ryan sent these special Barbies and Kens to start Greta’s birthday with all the feelings!!”

Fans of the movie will be pleased to know the official Barbie score is also now available to listen to in addition to its rousing musical numbers.

Meanwhile, there’s already Oscar buzz surrounding Gosling’s portrayal of Ken, which Gerwig revealed was inspired by his appearance on Saturday Night Live.

“You know those actors you can… just sort of feel that they know what’s funny, and I always felt that about him,” she said on the SmartLess podcast.

“And then I’m a big fan of all of his SNLs, I always thought he was great on SNL…

“He did ‘Guy That Just Got a Boat’ on ‘Weekend Update,’ and it’s so good.”

Despite considering Gosling for the part from the beginning, Gerwig had to admit to Warner Bros that she didn’t personally know him when his name was written into the script.

Thankfully, her gamble paid off and Barbie is on track to becoming the biggest film of the year.

Earning twice as much as its weekend rival Oppenheimer, it now just has The Super Mario Bros Movie to beat to become the highest-grossing film of 2023.
