'I'm an RV expert - a strict rule could see you kicked out of a park'

Holidaymakers are being warned of a "classist" rule that could cause them to be kicked out of any RV park.

TikTok shares important RV heat safety tips

Anybody who enjoys spending their summer vacation on four wheels is being warned to look out for a rule targeting lower-income campers, who may be asked to leave an RV park through no fault of their own.

Kyla is a travelling expert who documents her experience with “van life” which is when people live out of a vehicle all year round.

On her TikTok account @vanboozled, Kyla is warning people that some RV sites have something called the “10-year rule” which can cause people to be escorted out of a park.

In one video, Kyla explained: “The 10-year rule is when RV parks do not allow campers, trailers, fifth wheels, or Arby’s that are more than 10 years old.

“I've never heard a legitimately good reason as to why, but basically, they want their RV park to be a high-end luxury to appeal to people with money, make it aesthetically pleasing and just like really high class.”

The 10-year rule is often implemented in private campgrounds and is controversial among RV drivers.

Some people believe it helps maintain a certain atmosphere at a camping location while other people believe it is discriminatory.

Kyla said: “It’s a really classist notion that if you have an older camper or RV then you’re a lower-quality person.”

In another video, Kyla added that those in a higher tax bracket “can go stay in an RV park as they can afford a newer camper that meets the 10-year rule requirement at these RV parks.”

In Kayla’s comment section, many people felt that the 10-year rule was unfair for the majority of campers.

One user said: “They are trying to keep out the poor” while another person said: “That’s classism, masquerading as whatever excuse they’re using.”

Someone else wrote: “The funny thing is, it takes 10 years to pay off that luxury RV.”

However, some other commentators felt the 10-year rule was reasonable, as one person wrote: “Unfortunately that’s life, and likely has something to do with insurance as the older the vehicle the more expensive it might be to insure.”

Another traveler added: “A lot of RV parks will turn a blind eye to this rule as long as your equipment doesn’t look like trash.”
