Russia troops are dying in droves as Moscow launches furious attacks on a key city in Ukraine, according to the UK Ministry of Defense.

The intelligence assessment comes as Russia launches waves of attacks on the key city of Avdiivka on the eastern front.

In an update on X (formerly Twitter), the MoD posted: "Throughout November 2023, Russian casualties, as reported by the Ukrainian General Staff, are running at a daily average of 931 per day.

"Previously, the deadliest reported month for Russia was March 2023 with an average of 776 losses per day, at the height of Russia’s assault on Bakhmut."

Although London couldn't confirm the numbers, the UK MoD said that they were "plausible" if taken as soldiers killed and wounded.

UK's MoD added: "The last six weeks have likely seen some of the highest Russian casualty rates of the war so far. The heavy losses have largely been caused by Russia’s offensive against the Donbas town of Avdiivka."

Russia is thought to have lost hundreds of vehicles in its campaign to take the central Donetsk town and has since resorted to using mass infantry attacks that have proved particularly deadly for Moscow's men.

So-called Storm Z units - made up of released prisoners and soldiers under disciplinary action - have been used in the human wave attacks and are thought to have suffered enormous casualties.

The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) - a Washington-based think tank covering conflicts around the globe - noted that Russian capabilities near Avdiivka were likely weakened as a result of the losses.

Despite this, Moscow's troops appeared to continue attacking at that section of the frontlines.

It wrote: "Ukrainian officials reported that Russian forces began a renewed offensive effort towards Avdiivka on November 22, although likely with weaker mechanized capabilities than in the previous offensive waves that occurred in October."
