Central Park strangler Robert Chambers released after 15 years in New York prison

The so-called "preppy killer" Robert Chambers was released from prison after 15 years for a separate drugs case unrelated to the death of Jennifer Levin.

Robert Chambers - the who plead guilty to manslaughter in the killing of Jennifer Levin - has been released from prison after serving time for a separate assault and drugs case.

Chambers, 56, was freed from Shawangunk Correctional Facility this week after serving 15 years of a 19-year sentence for peddling cocaine and heroin out of his mid-town Manhattan apartment.

His whereabouts following his release are unknown but records show that the convict will be on parole until 2028.

Chambers shot to infamy following his implication in the killing of Jennifer Levin during the summer of 1986. Chambers and Levin, 19 and 18 at the time, ran in the same social circle partying at high-end venues.

Levin expressed interest in becoming serious with Chambers - who had a reputation as a hard-partying ladies' man - and the two had been intimate twice before the fateful night in Central Park when Levin lost her life.

After Levin again expressed her interest in a relationship with Chambers in the early hours of August 26, he took her to Central Park near the Metropolitan Museum of Art to have sex.

Chambers then became violent and strangled the 18-year-old to death as she scratched and clawed at him for three minutes while struggling for her life.

The Central Park strangler then beat Levin and smothered her with her jean jacket before fleeing the scene.

Levin was found with her legs spread and her bra pushed up to expose her breasts by a shocked passing bicyclist who quickly called 911.

Cops clocked Chambers as a suspect and after initially lying he told police that he had killed Levin but insisted that it had happened accidentally during rough sex.

Chambers took a plea deal that saw him plead guilty to manslaughter and serve a five to 15-year sentence. He was released in 2003 after serving the full amount of time.

Just five years later, however, Chambers was back in the slammer, this time for drugs. Police found he was running a cocaine and heroin operation out of his apartment with his girlfriend Shawn Kovell.

While Kovell got off with probation, Chambers was sentenced to 19 years - longer than he received for killing Levin. He was released after serving 15 years of that sentence.
