'Snappier and smarter' Princess Kate follows Diana's footsteps with bold fashion choice

Kate has had a bit of a makeover this week. First, she changed her hair and now her wardrobe. She's following in the footsteps of the late Princess Diana.

Princess Kate has a new hairstyle, sporting curtain bangs, and has changed up her wardrobe.

At eight out of the last 10 royal engagements, spanning the past few weeks, Kate has been wearing trouser suits.

As a working royal, the events are part of her day job - and she’s dressing the part.

Ingrid Seward, Majesty magazine editor-in-chief, believes there’s intent in this shift: that Kate wants to be taken more seriously.

Seward compares the transition to that of Princess Diana in the 1980s, also opting for a more formal look, ditching the ballgowns.

Seward expands on Kate going business casual: "It's a look of the moment, which works well on the princess with her long legs, and those boxy jackets suit her. She wore those 'little girl' dresses for so long, but now she wants to look more sophisticated. It's more of a work-day look; she doesn't need to be in dresses anymore. A suit is snappier and smarter."

It’s not just the royal engagements, it’s how Kate and Prince William present themselves across the board, says Seward: ”Catherine’s suits come at a time when the Waleses are making the way they work much more businesslike.”

According to Seward, Prince William’s late mother, Princess Diana, had the same sort of epiphany: "Princess Diana also got into power suits because she wanted to be taken more seriously."

Seward shares the backstory on how Diana’s unforgettable silhouettes came about: “Indeed, the designer Jasper Conran once told me that one day in the mid-1980s, Diana had visited him and said she was fed up of ballgowns. He made her a series of sleek tuxedos to wear for evening functions instead and they became some of her most admired outfits.”

Even so, there are some naysayers, like From Berkshire to Buckingham’s Jane Barr, writing on her Instagram: “I don't mind the occasional trouser or suit, but she's been wearing this style so much of late.”

"I really miss the beautiful dresses and coats. This is, very frankly, boring. She is the Princess of Wales. I'd like to see some more pizazz.”

As the saying goes, you can’t please everyone.
