Nick Carter was overwhelmed by grief last November when his younger brother, Aaron Carter, tragically died at the age of 35.

As he soon headed out on the road with his fellow Backstreet Boys, the singer only brought up the tragedy for a few brief tributes during concerts and releasing a new song in his honor, but now the 43-year-old is opening up about the rocky road through the last 12 months.

Speaking to E!, the father-of-three admitted he still hasn’t quite come to terms with his brother’s sudden death as it is “still unbelievable to me”, but he’s keeping optimistic that one day he’ll be able to make sense of the tragedy.

Getting candid about his grief, Nick revealed that the biggest thing he currently struggles with is not being able to return to his brother like they used to.

The Hollywood star explained: “No matter what he and I had gone through in our lives, we always were able to make amends, always were able to get back to that place, and now I can't anymore and it hurts.”

Amid the heartbreak, Nick shared a moment of sincere gratitude for his family that have stuck by him through the darkest parts of the last 12 months.

This includes his wife of nine years Lauren Kitt Carter and their three children, seven-year-old Odin, four-year-old Saoirse and two-year-old Pearl.

Gushing over his little family, the Grammy award winner declared that if he lost everything else, including the Backstreet Boys and his ability to perform, he’d “be OK” if he just had his children by his side.

He added that trying to be “the best father I can be” has helped hone his focus in the aftermath of Aaron’s death and the daily routines he forced himself into for his children helped him cope from day to day.

Aaron tragically died on November 5th last year, with the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner reporting the cause of death as accidental drowning after inhaling difluoroethane and taking alprazolam.

The musician was discovered in his bathtub at his California home just weeks before his son’s first birthday.

Aaron’s twin sister Angel revealed last month that his ashes had finally been interred at the same star-studded cemetery where Matthew Perry was recently laid to rest.
