New York gunman on run after 'firing shots while interrupting attempted subway robbery'

The alleged runaway gunman has not yet been apprehended, but cops arrested Matthew Roesch, 49, and have charged him with attempted robbery.

A vigilante who fired a gun in a Midtown New York subway station Tuesday night as an attempted robbery took place is still at large, according to police.

No injuries were reported following the incident, which reportedly occurred at 9:13 p.m. at the 49th Street N, R, W subway station in Manhattan, near Times Square.

Sources speaking to CBS New York alleged that Matthew Roesch, 49, was panhandling on the platform of the subway and approached a 40-year-old woman, demanding he give him her bag.

It was then that another man witnessed the altercation and pulled out a gun, firing two shots, they allege.

Sources told the outlet that police believe the gunman was not actually aiming for Roesch, and had dicharged his firearm to break up the attempted robbery.

Roesch was taken into custody by responding officers, and charged with attemped robbery, but police are still searching for the alleged gunman.

Police describe man as between the ages of 35-45, 5'9", and about 230 pounds.

He was last seen wearing a light green t-shirt, black shorts, white socks, black sneakers, a green book bag, and a green B&H bag.
