Tuesday’s new moon in Sagittarius is ‘chaotic’ but good for starting a particular project

The new moon on Tuesday is a great day to wrap up a project or kick start a new one, astrologers say.

“This is a very aggressive and adventurous new moon - it’s pretty chaotic but not too serious,” astrologer Maren Altman says. “It looks like the final push on something you’ve been working really hard at and just need to finish off.”

The new moon will peak on Tuesday, December 12 at 12:31 p.m. EST and will be occurring in the sign of Sagittarius. 

“New moons are always when the sun and the moon are together - they are the beginning of the lunar cycle and show the start of something new,” Maren says. 

Sagittarius is a sign associated with adventure, however, with the moon conjunct Mars – similar to last month’s new moon in Scorpio – there will be an aggressive energy brought to the astrological event. Mercury will also be stationing retrograde this day, which shows heightened confusion. Here is what you need to know.

What is happening during this full moon?

The sign of the new moon defines the energy and the archetype of what that new beginning is occurring, Maren explains, and this astrological event is happening in the mutable fire sign, Sagittarius, which is all about “adventure, empowerment, and motivation.” She describes them as “the hype men” of the zodiac.

“This is showing a new moon of being excited and empowered and wanting to motivate ourselves to start something adventurous,” she explains.

This new moon is happening in the final third decan of Sagittarius, which is associated with the 10 of Wands tarot card, also known as The Lord of Oppression because it is ruled by Saturn, the planet of boundaries.

“This usually shows that we are at the outcome stage - you are either going to win or lose, and this is the final stage to determine that,” she says. “It definitely feels like the last lap of something or finishing it off.”

However, she warns, if this falls in a difficult place in your chart it could indicate that you are avoiding an ending.

Similar to last month’s new moon in Scorpio, this final new moon of the year will be conjunct Mars, the planet of aggression, which shows “conflict.”

“It’s definitely not a cute little new moon for emotional or spiritual new beginnings as much as one, I would say, about getting your ass kicked and really kicking up into high gear.”

The moon is also squaring Neptune, the planet of delusion, which shows “confusion, fatigue, or not being rooted in strict reality with the direction you’re taking.” It doesn't help that Mercury in Capricorn is also stationing retrograde today. We simiarly ended last year during a Mercury retrograde in Capricorn, so thinking back to that time could give you insight into themes that will resurface.

“You could be overwhelmed with the excitement or adrenaline of finishing this off [or] you could also be really excited about achieving it but not super certain on the path towards that achievement,” she says.

However, on a more positive note, Venus in Scorpio - which is where the planet of love and beauty is at its weakest - is opposite Jupiter in Taurus. These two planets are considered the benefics of the zodiac, meaning that they possess pleasant and positive qualities.

“Venus in Scorpio can be intense, it can be volatile, it can be black or white, but opposite Jupiter shows [abundance] - it is very grateful,” she says, explaining that this will show up in helpful and harmonious relationships that are helping us to look on the bright side.

Venus will also be conjunct the asteroid, Pallas, which is associated with feminine wisdom, which shows caretaking energy will be present. Venus will also be loosely opposite Uranus, the planet of disruption, which may show unexpected relationship dynamics at play.

“If you are starting anything around this new moon, I would say it would be one for workouts or finishing something off and getting hard work done, [and] not the best for anything emotional because it’s kind of rough,” she concludes.
