A man said he should have full control over his wife's money as her spending habits are ‘absurd, irresponsible and unacceptable'.

A man has divided the internet after he claimed he deserved access to his wife’s inheritance money to monitor how she spends it.

Money is a touchy subject for many couples, as the line between personal and joint finances remains blurry. One man found himself in hot water after he told his wife how she should be spending her father’s money.

Taking to Reddit, the man explained that his wife had inherited $200,000 from her late father, whom she was very close to.

His wife put half of it towards paying off debt, a year’s worth of rent, paying for cars and insurance. The other $100,000, she "squandered" through on "lavish" purchases, according to the man.

He had initially asked his wife if he could be put onto the account, but she said he had "no right to it". He clarified that he did not want to use any of the money, but wanted to "monitor her spending".

"I saw her spending habits getting out of hand early and would confront her to which she always replied 'You don’t get to tell me how to spend my dad’s blood money!'

"She bought $400 dollar pans, her friend convinced her to spend $400 on plants for the house. Amazon deliveries almost daily. She booked three multi-thousand dollar vacations for the kids this summer.

"Any time I questioned her spending she would get combative and say that her dad would want her to have fun and spoil the kids."

He felt like if he had been "more aggressive" in his approach to monitor her spending, they would probably still have the money left.

He concluded by saying he understood that he did not have any rights over her money, but thinks he should have been given access as her spending habits were "absurd, irresponsible and unacceptable".

"Am I being the a******?", he asked.

Reddit users were divided over the couple's finances. Some believed that the poster’s wife should have spoken with him to discuss how they would be using the money.

One said: "It's incredible she squandered all that money. If I inherited that much money, I would discuss with my spouse what we should use it for."

Another went as far as saying the man should divorce his wife over this: "She is going to move the goalposts every time you call her out on this. She is going to ruin your lives with her spending issues. Start looking for a lawyer."

However, others thought she had done her part by spending the first $100,000 on things the couple needed.

They said: "She already used half of the money to pay off all your (joint, I'm assuming) debts. She paid rent for a year. That was the safety net her money provided you."
