Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana has won the House speaker vote - bringing to end weeks of bitter House infighting.

Johnson was the GOP’s fourth nominee for speaker in three weeks and took his bid to the House floor for a vote on Wednesday.

No Republicans defected while voting for Johnson, with no opposition emerging for his candidacy from his party.

Johnson also had an important GOP backer: Donald Trump. The former president spoke to reporters Wednesday at the New York courthouse where he is facing a civil fraud trial.

He said: “I think he’s going to be a fantastic speaker.”

Trump added that he hadn’t heard "one negative comment about him", saying: "Everybody likes him."

Johnson won his party’s nomination late Tuesday night, hours after Majority Whip Tom Emmer of Minnesota became the third Republican nominee to fail since former Speaker Kevin McCarthy was ousted in early October.

Endorsements for Johnson poured in overnight, including from Rep. Jim Jordan and Majority Leader Steve Scalise.

There were 220 votes for Johnson and 209 votes for Democrat Hakeem Jeffries. There was unanimous GOP support.

Johnson has long been a vocal supporter of Trump.

He was first elected to the House in 2016 and serves as vice chairman of the House Republican Conference, as well as GOP deputy whip.

He gained rapid support from Republicans on Tuesday night, with lawmakers chanting at a press conference after their internal vote: "Mike! Mike! Mike!"

Johnson's win comes after a tumultuous month of trying to select a House Republican speaker nominee, with Rep. Tom Emmer winning the nomination on Tuesday but dropping out of the race just hours later after Trump bashed his nomination.

Trump said in reference to Emmer: "He wasn't MAGA."
