Meghan Markle was left "in floods of tears", after the Palace put out a statement in Prince William and Prince Harry’s name dismissing claims that the heir to throne bullied the couple out of the family - a move that unfuriated the Duke of Sussex.

The brothers had been close in their boyhood days, supporting each other through their parents’ painful, public divorce and the devastating loss of their mother, Princess Diana.

But the relationship between the princes is now said to be at breaking point, with William attending to his royal duties in the UK, and Harry building a new life with Meghan stateside.

A body language expert claimed that at the funeral of their grandmother Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022, that the brothers didn’t seem to “exchange acknowledgments” with each other at the funeral apart from one moment when Meghan Markle and Prince Harry entered the pews at Westminster Abbey.

Another frosty encounter followed at their father King Charles III's Coronation, which saw Harry and William separated by several rows during the service.

It’s thought their relationship came under strain after Harry wed Meghan, and the Sussexes struggled to cope with the pressures and scrutiny of royal life.

In the couple’s bombshell Netflix docuseries, Harry & Meghan, the pair recall an episode that the Duke claims infuriated him and made Meghan cry.

The flashpoint came when Harry says he didn’t give permission for the Palace to issue a joint palace statement dismissing the bullying claims, and claims that a wedge was driven between them and William.

Speaking in the series, Harry said: "I mean, the saddest part of it was this wedge created between me and my brother so that he's now on the institution's side.

"And I get, part of that I get. I understand, right? That’s his inheritance, so to some extent it's already ingrained in him that part of his responsibility is the survivability and the continuation of this institution.

“That day, a story came out that part of the reason why Meghan and I were leaving was because William had bullied us out.

“And once I got in the car after the meeting, I was told about a joint statement that had been put out in my name and my brother's name squashing the story about him bullying us out of the family.

He added: "I couldn’t believe it. No one had asked me permission to put my name to a statement like that. And I rang M and I told her and she burst into floods of tears because within four hours they were happy to lie to protect my brother and yet for three years, they were never willing to tell the truth to protect us."

Since stepping down from their working roles within the Firm in 2020, Harry and Meghan are understood to have barely spoken with much of the family - and are not currently on speaking terms with Prince William and Princess Kate, with whom they were once referred to as the "Fab Four".

Kensington Palace didn't comment on the claims at the time.

But royal commentator Jennie Bond claims one point of contact within the family remains - Princess Eugenie. Ms Bond also took aim at the couple over their rumoured relationship with the Kardashian family.

"They seem to have cut all ties with the Royal Family - except for Princess Eugenie - so it seems inevitable that they will now embrace lives as La La Land celebs,” Ms Bond said.

“Personally I think it would be ludicrous and rather demeaning to appear in The Kardashians. I think they are better than that."

A royal insider recently claimed to Heat magazine that the Royal Family was "concerned" about the Duke and Duchess’ friendship with Eugenie and Beatrice, saying: "For the King, Camilla, and the Waleses, it's rather unfortunate that Eugenie and Beatrice are so close with the Sussexes."
