The Oscar-winning actress and singer will portray the Joker's girlfriend Harley Quinn in the highly anticipated follow-up to one of DC's most divisive movies.

Lady Gaga went by a totally different name while filming the upcoming supervillain sequel, Joker: Folie à Deux.

In fact, the actress apparently went full method for the film with a key member of the crew claiming he “never even met” the real Lady Gaga.

The Born This Way star will portray Dr Harleen Quinzel/Harley Quinn in Warner Bros' follow-up to the origin story of Batman’s arch-nemesis, played by Joaquin Phoenix.

Director of Photography Lawrence Sher claimed she didn’t start warming up to him until he started calling her ‘Lee’.

“I didn’t know Stefani [Germanotta] at all,” he explained.

“Strangely, I felt like I never even met her, even during the makeup/hair tests. Maybe it was my philosophy of not trying to get in their space.

“And then I remember for a week, being like, ‘God, I feel like we are disconnecting. Not even connecting. We are like on opposites.’”

Sher had candid conversations with his crew admitting he thought Gaga hated working with him on the DC flick.

However, things started to click into place when the Assistant Director told him she wanted to go by a different name when she was on set.

“I was like, 100 percent,” he recalled on The Trenches Talk podcast.

“The next thing I said was something ‘Lee,’ and it was like everything changed.

“From that point on, it was like she was…our whole connection changed. I was like, alright, cool.”

Why Gaga preferred being called Lee on the set is uncertain, though it’s presumably a shortening of her character’s name Harley.

The Joker’s romantic sidekick has recently been reimagined as a solo anti-hero and has been portrayed in live-action by Barbie star Margot Robbie.

After reprising the role for a third time in 2021’s The Suicide Squad, she has shown her support for another interpretation of the iconic character.

“It makes me so happy because I said from the very beginning that all I want is for Harley Quinn to be one of those characters the way…like Macbeth or Batman always gets passed from great actor to great actor,” she told MTV News.

“Someone gets to do their Batman, or someone gets to do their Macbeth…

“It’s such an honor to have built a foundation strong enough that Harley can now be one of those characters that other actors get to have a go at playing. And I think she’ll do something incredible with it.”

Joker: Folie à Deux releases in theaters on October 4, 2024.
