Former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has announced he will retire from Congress at the end of the month.

Writing in an op-ed published in The Wall Street Journal, he said: "I have decided to depart the House at the end of this year to serve America in new ways. I know my work is only getting started."

His departure follows a tumultous year in which he was ousted from his role as Speaker of the House of Representatives in a shock vote in the fall.

Reflecting on his career, he wrote: "I never could have imagined the journey when I first threw my hat into the ring.

"I go knowing I left it all on the field—as always, with a smile on my face. And looking back, I wouldn’t have had it any other way."

He also backed his record during the speakership as well as the work of his fellow .
McCarthy continued: "We reduced the deficit by more than $2 trillion, revamped work requirements for adults on the sidelines, cut red tape for critical domestic energy projects, and protected the full faith and credit of the US.
"We kept our government operating and our troops paid while wars broke out around the world.
"No matter the odds, or personal cost, we did the right thing. That may seem out of fashion in Washington these days, but delivering results for the American people is still celebrated across the country.

In January, McCarthy became House Speaker after a chaotic 15 rounds of voting.

His tenure came to an end in October when a contingent of ultra-right Republicans ousted him in a historic vote.

McCarthy's time as Speaker lasted only ten months - the third shortest period in US history.

The only two congressmen whose speakerships lasted fewer days than McCarthy’s are Michael Kerr – who died in office in 1876.

Theodore Pomeroy served for only the last day of the 40th Congress in 1869.

No House speaker has served for less than a year in total since 1876.

His ousting followed his cooperation with Democrats in a bipartisan effort to avoid a government shutdown, which enraged some of his fellow GOP members.
