President Joe Biden is losing support among young voters, a key group ahead of the 2024 presidential election, a new poll shows.

In a hypothetical general election matchup, Biden saw 42 percent support from voters ages 18 to 34, while former president Donald Trump led him with 46 percent support, according to the NBC News data.

Young voters were an important group for Biden’s victory in 2020, with an exit poll from NBC News in 2020 finding Biden won voters ages 18 to 29 by more than 20 points.

The newest poll is an early warning sign for Biden’s 2024 campaign, as Trump gains support from the age group.

However, Trump’s lead in the group was within the subgroup’s margin of error in the poll - at 6.2 percentage points.

In a hypothetical general election matchup with voters of all ages, Trump led with 46 percent support while Biden trailed behind at 44 percent support.

To make things worse for Biden, he saw one of his lowest approval ratings ever since becoming president at 40 percent, according to the poll.

In addition, 57 percent of voters said they disapproved of his presidency.

Meanwhile, Trump holds more support than Biden in terms of favorability, with 42 percent having a favorable view of Trump and 55 percent an unfavorable one, according to a poll from Quinnipiac University in Connecticut.

And when it comes to Biden’s handling of the Israel-Hamas war, 56 percent of the NBC poll’s respondents said they disapproved.

This comes as Biden has faced backlash from the American public on his foreign policy stance, as many US citizens have pressured the president to call for a “ceasefire” in Gaza.
