President faces a foreign policy disaster as $6billion that was to be used to free five imprisoned Americans from could now be frozen.

A bill was approved by lawmakers in Washington on Thursday that would see the funds frozen permanently.

Named the No Funds for Iranian Terrorism Act, the bill was voted through with a 307 to 119 vote.

Democrats were among those who voted in favour of the bill.

The legislation aims to stop the funds being sent to Iran. The bill is now headed for the Senate.

The White House unfroze the funds in September, but many Republicans have tried to push the Biden administration to change course after Iran was accused of supporting in carrying out a brutal attack on on October 7.

Controversy also surrounded the initial cash-for-prisoners deal because it coincided with 9/11.

After Hamas' attack, various figures laid out their plans to block funds being sent to Iran.

House Foreign Affairs Committee Ranking Member Rep. Michael McCaul said: "If they won't do it, then we will.

"Congress will stop this money from going into Iran, not just for politics, not even for the American people, but for the victims of terrorism around the world, especially the people of Israel."

Donald Trump said of Biden's plans: "This incompetent FOOL is absolutely destroying America. He had the audacity to announce this terrible deal today, September 11th."

Ron DeSantis, who is also running to the the Republican nominee in 2024, said: "This deal bankrolls nuclear ambitions, hostage takers, and extremists who hate America."

Mr McCaul added: "I remain deeply concerned that the administration's decision to waive sanctions to facilitate the transfer of $6billion in funds for Iran, the world's top state sponsor of terrorism, creates a direct incentive for America's adversaries to conduct future hostage-taking."
