Countless fans across the globe were devastated yesterday following news the music legend Jimmy Buffett had tragically died at the age of 76 following a spat of hospitalizations earlier this year.

Although the Margaritaville singer kept his fans updated on his health, he never revealed what the hospitalizations had been for, only simply declaring: “Growing old isn’t for sissies.”

However, it has now been revealed that the rock musician was fighting skin cancer and the diagnosis is said to be behind his cause of death, according to TMZ.

For the past four years, alongside his shows and concerts across the US, the singer-songwriter had been desperately battling the disease which ultimately turned into lymphoma.

Sources explained to the outlet: “He lived his life in the sun, literally and figuratively.”

Last Monday, the singer’s family faced a devastating reality as he was put into hospice care.

As his nearest and dearest poured in to share their final moments with the musician Sir Paul McCartney was among the last to see Jimmy.

The Beatles legend reportedly came to Jimmy’s home a week ago and serenaded him and his family.

Jimmy is being mourned across the globe by Parrotheads, the name given to his fans, and his own A-list pals too.

The devastating news was delivered over his official social media pages, assuring fans: “Jimmy passed away peacefully on the night of September 1st surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs.

“He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many.”

The singer is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jane Slagsvol, and their three children, Savannah, Sarah and Cameron.

Despite his commitment to the laidback aesthetic of the beach bum soft rock genre he helped to establish, the singer was a dedicated worker and had been tirelessly working in the industry for over 50 years.

Jimmy had released 32 albums over the course of his career and had been performing on stage just months before his death.

Alongside music, the 76-year-old was also a best-selling author and launched several Margaritaville-themed businesses including a record label, casino, video game and retirement communities.

At one point in time, Jimmy’s sensational business portfolio earned him an annual income of over $40million according to The Independent and is ranked just above LeBron James in Forbes’ list of the Richest Celebrities of All Time with an estimated net worth of $1billion.
