Three Israelis were killed in a brutal attack at a crowded bus stop in Jerusalem on Thursday.

Two men were caught on camera getting out a car in the middle of the highway and beginning the rampage, which took place at the Givat Shaul junction, on the main highway from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, at around 7:40 a.m.

The attackers were confirmed to be two Palestinian brothers in their 30s from occupied East Jerusalem, according to Israeli police.

They were killed by two off-duty IDF soldiers and a civilian, police said on Facebook.

Hamas, the militant group that controls Gaza, has claimed responsibility for the attack.

In a statement on Telegram, Hamas said that "the operation came as a natural response to unprecedented crimes conducted by the occupation." It called for "an escalation of the resistance," AFP reports.

The Times of Israel named the victims as Livia Dickman, 24, Elimelech Wasserman, 73, and Hannah Ifergan, who was in her 60s.

Police seized "a lot of ammunition" from the brothers' cars following the shooting.

Thursday's attack came hours after Israel and Hamas extended their ceasefire as both parties negotiate prisoner exchanges.

The Israeli security agency Shin Bet said the attackers had previously been jailed for terrorist activity.

Israeli national minister Itamar Ben Gvir said the shooting further justifies Israel's recent decision to arm civilians after the brutal October 7 attack that left 1,200 people dead and kicked off the latest Israel-Hamas War, which has decimated Gaza and left many more Palestinian civilians dead.

"This event proves again how we must not show weakness, that we must speak to Hamas only through the (rifle) scopes, only through the war," he said at the site of the attack, according to Reuters.
