No Thanksgiving meal is complete without rich gravy dripping from your roast turkey, and it is very easy to make from scratch.

While you can buy gravy from most supermarkets, homemade gravy is usually considered better as it is usually packed with more flavor, is much fresher, and is taken from meat turkey drippings from the roasting pan.

It does not have to be a time-consuming process to make gravy at the end of cooking up a Thanksgiving meal, and this “thick satisfying gravy” can be made with leftover ingredients.

Both Sarah Mastracco and Martha Stewart developed this “simple” gravy recipe which can easily be made in around 15 to 20 minutes.

While on the Martha Stewart Show, Sarah said: “I actually love turkey gravy. For me, this is the most important part of the meal, I put it on everything. I think there are few things you can do with the preparations for this to make it the perfect gravy and not stress.”

How to make Martha Stewart and Sarah Mastracco's simple turkey recipe

You will need:

  1. Half a cup (one stick) of unsalted butter
  2. ¾ cups of all-purpose flour
  3. 3/4 cup of dry white wine
  4. Roasting pan with turkey drippings
  5. Salt and pepper

Instructions

Place a saucepan on the stove and melt the butter over medium heat. Once the butter has melted and begins to bubble, then mix in the flour. Keep stirring and cook for around 10 minutes until the flour has fully integrated and the butter has a nutty fragrance.

Once your turkey has cooked and is resting, pour all the pan drippings into a glass bowl and use a spoon to remove the fat from the drippings. You can also use a fat separator if you have one

Place the former turkey roasting pan over two stove burners on medium heat. Pour the wine into the pan and use a wooden spoon to scrap any bottom bits remaining in the pan. Cook for around two minutes until the wine has reduced. Add in your pan drippings and continue to cook.

Next, add four cups of hot turkey stock and bring the gravy to a boil. Once it is bubbling, reduce it to a simmer and slowly add your flour-butter mixture. Keep adding the mixture until you have a thick gravy, and then season with salt and pepper.

Your simple yet delicious Thanksgiving gravy is now ready to serve.
