For many people, no Thanksgiving meal is ready without green bean casserole, which has become a staple side dish for the holiday.

This dish makes your vegetables even better with well-seasoned green beans served in a creamy sauce with crispy shallots spread on top.

While it is popular to simply opt for the canned version of this dish, Campbell’s French Green Bean Casserole, you can also elevate your Thanksgiving meal by making this dish from scratch, which does not take long.

Shereen Pavlides, a cook and cookbook author has explained that the canned version of this scrumptious dish “sucks” and this recipe can be made in around 40 minutes.

In a video online, Shereen said: “Green bean casserole. An old American classic. We’re making it from scratch.”

Instructions

To begin, place your green beans in a pot of boiling water and cook them for two to five minutes. Remove them and place them in ice water, then pat them dry with paper towels.

Take a skillet and place it on a medium heat on the stove. Add the tablespoons of butter and the mushrooms seasoned with salt, pepper, and thyme.

Saute the mushrooms for around five minutes or until golden and tender. Add in your garlic and cook for around one minute.

Add a quarter cup of all-purpose flour and fully coat the mushrooms. Keep stirring until the flour has been absorbed. Then, add half a cup of wine and continue to mix.

Add in your chicken stock and milk and then season once again with salt and pepper.

Bring your mixture to a boil and then reduce the heat to bring it to a simmer. Cook for around five to seven minutes while stirring to cook away any raw flour taste.

Add your blanched green beans to the skillet and mix them in thoroughly. Add the mixture to an oven dish and cook for around 25 minutes or until your casserole appears hot and bubbly.

While the casserole is cooking, fry up your shallots. When ready, take the casserole out of the oven and add the crispy shallots on top.

Your tasty casserole side dish is now ready for Thanksgiving.
