Are you game enough to visit the “Ghost Palace” hotel in Bali? The abandoned Bedugul Taman Hotel has a mysterious history.

It’s now one of the island’s major sites, about an hour away from the tourist hotspot of Kuta. The plan for the five-star hotel was promising. Built in the 1990s, it was scheduled to be a luxury resort with incredible views over Lake Buyan, but it was never fully completed.

Today, it still stands, unloved and forlorn, covered in moss and creeping vines. There are broken windows and crumbling walls. Despite its sad state, it attracts intrigued visitors by the droves.

It is not technically open but visitors can still wander through the vast open spaces and up and down wide staircases. Fittings were never completed and many finishes were left undone.

The once-beautiful tiled floors are covered with mud and puddles of water and the walls are now home to spiders and their webs. The hotel is thought to be haunted by the ghosts of workers who died building it.

Locals, it is said, give it a big swerve. Even taxi drivers refuse to enter the grounds to avoid the lurking spirits.

The hotel is vast and would have been stunning. It is built along a ridge and stepped down the hillside overlooking rice paddies. In the gardens, giant stone serpents, shrouded in vines, sit on either side of the staircase.

The local wildlife is loving the untouched fauna - it’s home to snakes, fish, spiders, and lizards.
