Insane Hamas tunnels are flooded with water as Israelis pictured setting up pumps

It comes after an IDF spokesperson sparked international condemnation this week by claiming that flooding the tunnels would be a "good idea".

Video appears to show Hamas tunnels being flooded

New footage shared from Gaza purportedly shows Hamas' tunnels filled with water after reports that Israel could try and flood the underground network.

Earlier this week, US officials told the Wall Street Journal that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) hoped to destroy the terror group’s tunnels by sending in water from the Mediterranean Sea.

Reports claimed that the IDF had assembled at least five pumps capable of sending hundreds of thousands of litres of water into the tunnels every hour.

Herzi Halevi, the IDF’s chief of staff, also admitted that flooding the tunnels would be a“good idea”.

Military analyst Professor Michael Clarke also told Sky News: "Yes it can be done, and yes it would work."

While the plan is workable from a military perspective, some experts have raised concerns about other potential issues.

Professor Clarke warned flooding the tunnels could pollute the aquifers that assist with Gaza's water supply.

He added: "That would be a piece of environmental vandalism which the world would not thank Israel for.

"Letting a story get out may be a piece of psychological warfare so that it gets any Gazans in the tunnels to get out."

Prof. (Emer.) Eilon Adar of the Zuckerberg Institute for Water Research at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, in southern Israel, made a similar warning.

Speaking to the Times of Israel, he said: “As a citizen, despite the disaster that we experienced on October 7, I still think that in the long run — and we have to think of the future — it would be politically and morally incorrect to have a thirsty neighbor."

On Wednesday, Israeli troops were pictured setting up the pumps that could see Gazan tunnels flooded.

On the same day, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Israeli troops had surrounded the house of Yahya Sinwar, the man who masterminded Hamas' attack on Israel.

He said: “[On Tuesday night] I said our forces can reach anywhere in the Gaza strip. Now they are surrounding Sinwar’s house. His house is not his fortress ... but it’s only a matter of time until we get him."

IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari also said: “I won’t elaborate on where exactly and what we know. Our job is to get to Sinwar and kill him.”
