Where is the cast of Freaky Friday now? From Oscars, kids and a long-awaited sequel

Disney's body-switching comedy is one of the studio's most beloved films that teamed up-and-coming star Lindsay Lohan with Hollywood legend Jamie Lee Curtis. But where are they now, and are we ever going to get a sequel?

Freaky Friday trailer

Freaky Friday turns 20 this year, and a lot has happened to the star cast over the years.

After launching her career by playing twins in 1998’s Parent Trap, breakout star Lindsay Lohan was chosen again to lead Disney’s third adaptation of the 1972 novel by Mary Rodgers.

She portrays teenager Anna Coleman, who’s fed up with her mother Tess (played by Jamie Lee Curtis) cramping her style and distrusts her soon-to-be stepdad Ryan (Mark Harmon).

However, a run-in with a mysterious fortune cookie gives them a change of perspective they never saw coming and they have to figure out how to return to their own bodies before it’s too late.

Daily Express US has the full rundown for the cast of Freaky Friday, including what they’re up to now and the latest on Disney’s highly-anticipated sequel.

Lindsay Lohan

Lindsay Lohan is well-known for other enduring hits like Mean Girls and Just My Luck, but her career took a hit in the late noughties and 2010s.

She made her feature film comeback in 2019 with Among the Shadows, though it struggled to find an audience and received poor reviews.

Last year, Lohan made another comeback in Falling for Christmas, which was much more warmly received and had one of the best opening weekends for a Netflix original movie.

As for her personal life, she’s currently married to financier Bader Shammas and they recently welcomed their first child, Luai.

Hollywood star Jamie Lee Curtis recently congratulated her Freaky Friday co-lead on becoming a mother.

Taking to Instagram, she wrote: “MAGIC MONDAY!

“My movie daughter just made me a movie grandmother. Blessings to Lindsay and Bader for the birth of Luai!”

She has been married to This Is Spinal Tap star Christopher Guest since 1984, and they have two adopted daughters together.

This year, Curtis finally won her first Academy Award for Everything Everywhere All At Once after five decades in showbiz.

Over the past fear years, she has also reprised her role as Laurie Strode in a new Halloween trilogy, appeared in Knives Out and Haunted Mansion and already has Emmy buzz for her guest appearance in the second season of The Bear.

Supporting Cast

Aside from Lohan and Curtis, Freaky Friday also features a large supporting cast who have had varying levels of success over the years.

Perhaps most notable is Mark Harmon, who became the iconic lead of NCIS as Leroy Jethro Gibbs in the same year as the film’s release.

However, he left the show in 2021 and hasn’t lined up any more projects since - although there are rumors he’ll eventually make a comeback to the CBS drama.

Also making one of his first film appearances was Chad Michael Murray, who was known at the time for his roles in Gilmore Girls and Dawson’s Creek.

He went on to portray the lead, Lucas Scott, in One Tree Hill for the first six seasons, and more recently made appearances in Agent Carter and Riverdale before making a string of Hallmark and Lifetime Christmas movies.

Other cast members who may look familiar include classic movie star Harold Gould, who died in 2010, Stephen Tobolowsky (Deadwood, Glee) and Julie Gonzalo (Veronica Mars, Supergirl).

Sequel

Reports of a Freaky Friday sequel surfaced last year when Curtis revealed she was still in touch with Lohan and was eager to reunite for another film.

She later confirmed on The View that she had approached Disney with a pitch, and it didn’t take long for Lohan to express interest in the project as well.

In February 2023, Curtis confirmed the movie “is going to happen”, and the two co-stars told the New York Times they “would only make something that people would absolutely adore”.

An official greenlight from Disney came a little later, and in June 2023 Curtis confirmed that filming on a sequel was set to start next year.

Things could change now the actors’ union SAG-AFTRA is currently on strike, but hopefully this means the 20-year-old comedy will finally get a sequel soon - at least, before it turns 30.

Freaky Friday is available to stream on Disney+.
