Alleged Florida kidnapping plot 'foiled' as suspects 'snatch wrong man and waterboard him'

Three men allegedly swooped to abduct a man outside his Florida home, before discovering they had targeted the wrong person.

Three men have been charged after a bizarre kidnapping plot saw them mistakenly snatch a man who was not their intended target before torturing him, according to federal officials.

According to a criminal complaint filed in federal court, the suspects abducted the man at gunpoint outside his apartment in Plantation, Florida, on Oct. 13.

They then allegedly threw the man’s cell phone out of the car as they drove him to a home and took him inside.

They eventually learned that they had captured the wrong man, having mistaken him for his colleague, whom they had intended to target, authorities said.

The alleged victim told cops the men had subjected him to torture, threatening him with a drill before dousing him with water, “effectively waterboarding him”, the complaint alleges.

The men were then allegedly "brainstormed" how the victim could help lure his colleague to them.

They provided the victim with a cellphone and managed to access his iCloud account to find the coworker’s phone number, and call him, authorities claimed.

Upon learning that the man they were looking for was still at a business in , they transported the man there and asked him to get his colleague to come outside, the complaint states.

But after entering the building, the man instead phoned in a bomb threat in hopes of summoning a large police response to the building, according to the complaint.

The three suspects Jeffrey Arista, 32, Jonathan Arista, 29, and Raymond Gomez, 33, were arrested and jailed in Broward County, Florida.

On Monday, Jeffrey Arista, and Jonathan Arista had their initial appearances in federal court on kidnapping charges. Raymond Gomez, hasn’t yet appeared in court.

The three face a maximum life prison sentence if convicted.
