Trump v Biden: Democrats warned if they stick with 'too old' Joe they'll get Kamala

EXCLUSIVE: New polling confirms that Americans have lost confidence in Joe Biden because of the signs of age.

Basham discusses the consequences of Biden being seen to be too old

Almost seven in 10 (68 percent) of Americans now believe Joe Biden is too old to be President as he pushes to run for a second term next year.

After a series of stumbles, confused statements and increasing signs of visibly aging, the Washington DC based Democracy Institute poll for Daily Express US has revealed that the President's infirmity is effecting Americans's confidence in their 80-year-old President.

In contrast, Donald Trump, who looks set to get the Republican nomination aged 77, just three years younger than the President, but does not attract the same concerns.

The poll of 1,500 likely US voters from across parties and independents suggested less than a third (31 percent) believe he is too old.

The results though leave the Democrats with a difficult choice over whether to stick with the President or parachute in another candidate at the last minute.

Democracy Instute director Patrick Basham warned that if Biden remains the candidate then Trump's campaign team will legitimately claim they are really running against Vice President Kamala Harris.

The problem for the Democrats is that Harris is far less popular than Biden despite his age.

According to the polling Trump beats Biden by 47 percent to 43 percent but easily hammers Harris by 48 percent to 41 percent.

Mr Basham said: "If Kamala Harris is still a Vice Presidential candidate and Biden does run, the campaign becomes Trump versus Harris.

"Then another quiver in the Trump campaign armoury is that they can make a plausible case that Harris will be President.

"Even if Biden's up to the job in 2025, he won't be up to the job in 27 or 28.

"So if Biden get reelected, Kamala Harris will become President at some point during that second term.

"Trump can and should and I'm sure will campaign against both."

Explaining why voters believe in Trump more than Biden despite only being three years younger, Mr Basham said it was because the ex-President gives off more energy.

Basham noted: "The really bad luck for Biden is that his opponent in 2020, and probably again in 24, is the guy who, although only a few years apart in age, in some nominal age is in a very different space.

"Trump seems ageless. And his energy level has always been off the chart, but it appears to remain so."

He speculated that the Democrats may be trying to work out how to "move Kamala Harris aside" to enable a fresh candidate like California Governor Gavin Newsom to be parachuted in as the Democrat candidate at the last minute.

Mr Basham described Biden's health as "upsettung and dismaying" for a "sizeable minority of Democrats."

He added: "There's very few of them who hand on heart who can say 'yeah, that's the guy we need for the next five years.'"
