David Harbour is afraid of being pigeonholed as Jim Hopper from .

So, he's officially decided to leave TV roles behind and focus more on movies once the hit Netflix series closes out with its fifth and final season (which is currently delayed because of the WGA strikes).

Speaking to Insider, Harbour recalled a publicist telling him 'maybe he didn't want to be associated with the show so much' during the first year of Stranger Things.

The actor, who tied the knot to singer Lily Allen in 2020, was shocked and said he loved the show and the character.

At the same time, Harbour eventually realized the publicist was right; he doesn't want to be just Hopper.

Harbour has already made progress branching out, playing Red Guardian in the MCU, Santa Claus in Violent Night, the titular character in Hellboy, and Jack Salter in Gran Turismo, which premieres on August 25.

Violent Night was Harbour's biggest success on the big screen, earning $76.6 million worldwide, and it made him crave more.

He explained: "I've been on Netflix ... but this was a small original movie that's going to a cinema. A whole new world opened up for me with that. I like this playing field. I want to make original movies that go to the movie theaters."

Instead of being Sheriff Hopper for the rest of his career, Harbour plans to make a name for himself in film.

The actor thinks about George Clooney leaving ER when he envisioning his next steps.

Harbour said: "Now we just see him as George Clooney. But there was a time when it was, 'The guy from ER is doing a movie with Nicole Kidman.'"

The 48-year-old is now trying to "navigate" that.

He added that's it's been tricky work because he doesn't want to insult the people that love him for Stranger Things, which he also loves.

However, at the same time, he kind of wants to "leave the nest."

The actor concluded: "I got more in me. I got different stuff in me, and I want you guys to see that.

"I don't want people yelling 'Hopper' on the street every five minutes the rest of my life."

Harbour will undoubtedly find just as great a role as Hopper for the big screen and fullfil his dreams.

But first he'll say goodbye to the moustached policeman one last time - however, filming has been majorly delayed as a result of the writers' and actors' strikes taking over Hollywood.
