Video shows a crowd watching in horror from the stands after a soccer player was struck by lightning mid-match.

Amateur footballer Caio Henrique de Lima Gonçalves, 21, was playing with his amateur team at a field in the Brazilian state of Paraná on Sunday when the tragedy took place.

Footage shows as his teammates rush over to pick him up and take him to safety.

Six others were injured, but Gonçalves was the only one who didn't make it.

The incident happened Sunday afternoon at the José Eleutério da Silva municipal stadium.

"It was raining, it was raining a lot, but the field offered playing conditions. It became very dark, at the moment of lightning it began to clear, it seemed that it was going to happen, and then the lightning struck and death occurred," said Marcos Ferreira, municipal director of sports of the town of Santo Antonio da Platina, according to Infobae.

No ambulances were present at the stadium, so Gonçalves was transproted to the hospital by private vehicle. It was there that he was pronounced dead.

"At the time it was very busy there. We were desperate, we took cars to take them to the hospital. Unfortunately he couldn't react. He was a friend, a companion. A very tragic event," said one of Gonçalves's teammates, Leonardo Augusto Castanheira Alves, in an interview with Brazilian news outelt G1.

Six other players were injured, one of whom remains in serious condition.

This is the latest weather-related death in Brazil as as lightning strikes wreak havoc upon different parts of the country.

Keyson Lucas, 16, lost his life on December 5 after being struck by lightning on the island of Trambioca in Belém.

He was trying to cross from one house to another during heavy rain when he was hit.

In another heartbreaking incident, a 35-year-old rural worker, Lázaro Assis Cordeiro, lost his life on December 4 while working in a field in the village of Coroatá, in the rural area of Jurema.
