The US Capitol Police have announced the arrest of two men after they crashed into a Capitol barricade - and one was allegedly carrying a firearm with a "giggle switch" to turn it into a machine gun.

The Washington, DC based police force issued a press release announcing the arrest of 20-year-olds Ricardo L. Glass and Onosetale Okojie on Monday (November 6) after the crash.

Police said they were arrested for a series of charges, including Carrying a Pistol Without a License (x2), Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle, Unlawful Entry of a Motor Vehicle, Receiving Stolen Property $1000 or More, Possession of a Large Capacity Ammunition Feeding Device, Fleeing from a Law Enforcement Officer in a Motor Vehicle, Felon in Possession, Reckless Driving, No Permit, Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol or Drugs, Possession of Unregistered Ammunition, Obliterate, Remove, Change or Alter the Serial Number of a Firearm, and Unlawful Possession of a Machine Gun.

A Glock handgun, with a 22-round extended magazine, was found on the passenger side seat, alongside an additional magazine. Another Glock, which had the “Giggle Switch” was found in a nearby flowerbed.

The Infiniti Q50 was stolen out of Prince George’s County, Maryland, authorities said.

Also known as a "Glock switch", a giggle switch is a small piece of machinery that can be attached to the end of a pistol.

It turns the pistol into a machine gun, making it capable of firing more than 1200 rounds per minute.

Giggle switches are illegal in all states of the union.

Explaining the circumstances of the incident, Capitol Police said: "On Sunday, while on routine patrol at approximately 2.15am, a USCP officer noticed a driver in a white Infiniti Q50 stopped along Massachusetts Avenue, NE, idling at a green traffic light by Union Station.

"Suspecting the driver could be impaired, the officer attempted to make a traffic stop. The driver then sped away and crashed into a Capitol Complex vehicle barricade near First Street and D Street, NE."

The driver and the passenger then ran away from the crash, authorities said, prompting a foot chase. One was captured in the 100 block of C Street, NE, while the other was captured in the 500 block of Second Street, NE.

“This is just another example of our officers and their vigilance and perseverance putting away dangerous criminals,” said USCP Assistant Chief Sean Gallagher in a statement in the press release.

“They are constantly working to keep everyone safe throughout the Capitol Complex.”

The press release also notes that no guns — even legal ones — are allowed near the Capitol building.

"This year, so far, the United States Capitol Police has confiscated more than 30 guns. All weapons are prohibited from Capitol Grounds - even if you have a gun that is legally registered in another state, or the District of Columbia," reads the warning.
