The dramatic last-minute touchdown from Kadarius Toney appeared to have earned the Chiefs a crucial victory but referees ruled that he had been offside.

Brittany Mahomes joined her husband Patrick Mahomes in condemning NFL referees after the Kansas City Chiefs were denied a last-minute win over the Buffalo Bills. The Chiefs fell to a 20-17 loss as a Kadarius Toney touchdown was ruled out, to the dismay of their star quarterback, who failed to hold back his anger.

An incensed Mahomes threw his helmet down in frustration after a late flag on a Kadarius Toney touchdown, with the wide receiver having been adjudged to have lined up offside. Prior to this, tight end Travis Kelce had executed a sumptuous play, which saw him catch the ball and supply a lateral, as Toney found the end zone moments later.

Although the controversial decision to call a penalty appeared to be the correct call from the referees after the 24-year-old was shown to have lined up in the neutral zone, that was seldom consolation for the dissenting voices from within the Chiefs camp. Among those left enraged was Mahomes' wife Brittany, who joined the naysayers in directing her ire towards the referees.

Taking to her Instagram Stories, the former soccer player - who was in attendance at Arrowhead Stadium alongside superstar Taylor Swift - issued a veiled response to the decision. In a short clip, she showed the referee in action during the game alongside the sarcastic caption: "MVP".

One reason why her husband may have been left so riled by the decision may have been the fact that referees had potentially not given a warning that Toney was offside. That said, it is usually the responsibility of the player to speak with the line judge in such situations and it is also possible that he may not have heard their call.

Either way, a major bone of contention for Mahomes appeared to be that the call had denied his colleague Kelce what would have been a memorable career moment. The angered QB took aim at the referees while speaking to reporters after the defeat, with his sympathy for his fellow star palpable.

"It’s tough to swallow. Not only from me, and football in general, to take away greatness like that," he asserted, adding: "For a guy like Travis [Kelce] to make a play like that, you want to see the guys on the field decide the game.

"They’re human. They make mistakes. But every week, we’re talking about something... It's the call. Just in that moment. Not for myself. To have a flag change the outcome of the game.

"I've never had offensive offsides called. If it does, they warn you. There wasn't a warning the entire game. And then you make a call like that in the final minute? Another game, we're talking about the refs. It's not what we want for the NFL. It's not what we want for football."

Mahomes added: "That's a Hall of Fame tight end making a Hall of Fame play, and that won't be shown on his resume because of an offensive offsides that does not affect the play. It takes away from not only this game, this season but from a legendary career that Travis [Kelce] has had."
