One worried apartment resident took to Reddit to share their spine-chilling story under the subreddit r/offmychest.

Internet users love sharing their real life horror stories online, including the tale of a man who got in too deep when he decided to fake paternity leave or this person whose partner got pregnant despite the fact they never had sex.

According to the anonymous user, there seems to have been someone coming in and out of their apartment while they’re away.

But what made the scenario even more disturbing is that the intruder's motives do not seem rooted in theft - and carbon monoxide issues had also been ruled out.

The Redditor began: “I've been noticing things are out of place when I get home from work. My curtains were moved, cabinets were open. But I just assumed I did it, and forgot about it. Until today.

“I walked into the kitchen and saw a couple of my drawers were opened. I never open my kitchen drawers. They're old, creaky and gross. I've never used them, and I never touch them. This was the confirmation I needed & it's terrifying. I live alone.

“I know the goal is not to steal because I have a laptop, PCs, and HD TV's at home and they haven't been touched. Idk what to do.”

In a later update, the online user detailed the measures taken to secure their living space, which included placing an object in the door jam, taping keyholes, fortifying the back door, and even ordering a camera for added surveillance.

In a subsequent follow-up edit, the resident suspected a neighbor across the hall, citing their easy access to observe when the resident left.

The worn-down strike plate on the front door suggested repeated unauthorized entries, and the resident discarded the involvement of maintenance or the landlord, they continued to fortify security measures, observing that suspicious activities stopped after implementing the precautions.

Other Redditors shared their security tips, with one person suggesting: “Check the attic, crawl space and/or closets to make sure there’s not a homeless person hiding away.”

Another user added: “I would, at the least, make a report to the police. Put a piece of clear tape on your door/jamb that will indicate if it's been entered after you left.

“Set your pc to record, faced at a door or your kitchen when you do leave. Use that as evidence that someone has been in your home.

“If you have a landlord, ask if they changed the locks after the tenant before you.”

A third commenter added: “Before you install a hidden camera, check around to see if there's one already installed by the intruder.”
