The Boston woman who was killed in a shark attack at a Sandals resort in the Bahamas on Monday has been identified.

Lauren Erickson Van Wart, 44, was paddle-boarding with her husband about a mile off the coast when she was bitten on the right hip and arm, according to Royal Bahamas Police spokesperson Desiree Ferguson.

The incident happened at the Sandals Royal Bahamian in Nassau at around 11:15 a.m. Photos from the scene show authorities carrying her body, covered in a red sheet, in a gurney across the resort's white sand.

Van Wart has worked as an editor at Curriculum Associates in North Billerica for nine years, according to her LinkedIn profile.

The education consultancy company issued a statement on Tuesday.

"Our team is heartbroken and grieving the loss of a dear and trusted colleague and friend. Lauren was a beloved member of our math editorial team, and she infused her deep dedication to students and educators into every material she touched," said CEO Rob Waldron. "Our Curriculum Associates community is mourning this tragedy and extends our deepest love and support to Lauren’s wonderful husband and all of her family.

A Jet Ski rider, present on the beach during the shark incident, reported witnessing the shark submerge the paddleboard.

Although the operator asserted that the individual attacked was a recently married person, law enforcement could not verify this claim.

Expressing his dismay, the Jet Ski operator, who preferred not to disclose his identity, told The Nassau Guardian: "That's truly heartbreaking." Recounting the events, he added, "It was surreal because, as I mentioned, I observed them launching from the beach. They were jovial, conversing, and side by side, sharing laughter."

Police said a lifeguard rescued the couple with a boat, but that the woman suffered serious injuries despite attempts to revive her, CBS News reports, citing a press conference livestream from Reuters.

"We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of a guest while on a paddleboarding activity nearly a mile from the shore. We wish to express our heartfelt condolences to the guest’s family and loved ones," Sandals said in a statement after the attack.

"We remain in close contact with them and are providing all support possible during this difficult time."

Last month, a 47-year-old woman went missing after encountering a shark on a diving trip off West End, Grand Bahama, according to multiple reports. She has still not been found.

On Facebook, witness Debra DeWeese said that another guest told her "he had heard the screams even though she was way out on the water, almost to Sandals private island."

According to the International Shark Attack File, shark attacks are less likely to kill you than things like excessive cold, lighting strikes and fireworks.

The US has the most reported shark attacks around the world, followed by Australia. The Bahamas comes in at number 9.
