Police searching for a 44-year-old teacher from Indiana say they have found a body face-down in a river. 

Elementery school teacher Amanda Webster was on holiday in Puerto Rico when she was reported as missing last week. Cops now say they have discovered a body in the Rio Blanco area, reports MailOnline.

However, cops say they have been unable to confirm the body is the Thompson Crossing Elementary School art teacher. Amanda's mother Pamela said it was her daughter who had been found in the river.

Writing on social media, she said Amanda had been underwater for "some time". Local Police Commissioner Antonio Lopez Figueroa activated an 'Ashanti Alert' - asking people to help search for Webster.

Amanda was reported missing by the landlord from the property she was staying at. She was last seen at the Casa Parcha guest house near El Yunque National Park in Naguabo. 

Writing on social media on Saturday, Amanda said: "Thank all of you for your support and prayers. They just found Amanda's body in the river, she had been under water for some time."

While Puerto Rican police said: "A lifeless body, which could be that of a woman, was found this morning in the river of the Rio Blanco neighborhood of the Sector Camino Viejo de Naguabo by the team that was in the area carrying out the search since yesterday.

"The body was found upside down floating in a rocky area of the river, so the CIC team of the Police, along with the Prosecutor's Office and staff of the Forensic Institute are working on the extraction and identification process of it. 

"At this stage it is not possible to identify the gender of the body or conclude if it shows signs of violence.

"She was reported missing on Wednesday by the owner of the place where she is staying, after noticing that she did not carry out the exit process as agreed and left her belongings and a rented car on the property."
